the knife smithy

Postby mosby's men on 06 Feb 2010 09:43

on the back of my workshop i have a roof that is held up by 4"x4"'s but is other wise open .
i decided to turn this in to my knife smithy . i put down pressure treated boards to frame in the floor and came up with a wall on two sides 4' high .
the inside wall will be covered with tin all the way up . the two sides with the 4 foot walls ,will have wooden windows that will swing out to let in light and air.
i just need to build some doors on one side and put up tin on the outside .

i put down a bunch of gravel and then started putting down 16" patio pavers as a floor , well we had a major rain i went out there and the water was up to
the top of the pavers ,so im going to pull them up and put down at least another two inches of gravel to keep the floor dry ,

i had to have a couple inches cut off the bottom of my metal anvil stand and new cross bars welded on because they had rusted out from getting wet.
the anvil is very heavy and i dont want to have to do that again in my life time. .

i have the propane forge all welded up , im just waiting on regulators and burners to arrive to test fire it.
i have some pictures and if i can figure out how to post them i will .

Mosbys men. I read your post. If you do not need to move the Anvil to accomplish this, and if you have not yet finished pulling up and replacing your pavers, might it be useful to consider putting in a drainage pipe too under the gravel, Just an idea IMHO. I too would love too see pictures .tyvm.

black item in foreground is propane forge ,waiting on parts to finish .
the oval shaped item next to it is the coal forge,
anvil is upside down behind that ,
the red thing is a hand cranked blower
i have a leg vise behind that i need to find a mounting bracket for .

i have enough pavers to do 3/4 ths of the floor now .

Mosbys men, There is a video out by Ron hood. titled primitive knife making . I believe it is #9 in his series. The knifemaker is a guy named Ty Goo. I get a warm fuzzy feeling inside every time I watch it. Ty Goo is a true artist and knows he craft well. Az
