Ye gods, man, what are you doing up so late(early)?

That battery holder looks woefully understocked. For those wishing you had supplied a measurement for the angle of the shelves, 5-10 degrees oughtta do it.

A- Are you referring to the plastic thing on the wall, or the two shelves of batteries in the rack??

Joe- Nice Rack! I think I could use one of those down cellar. Probably would work with canning jars too, just make the stop and sides substantial. I wouldn't want any glass jars to fall off.

Substitute some lag screws and anchors to mount it to my stone wall. (BTW, when drilling in stone or masonry, a good hammer drill and mason bits are a God send. If you’re not in a hurry, the old star drills and a hammer also work.)

Anyone got good ideas on hanging meat like ham and salami besides nails in the rafters?

Organization is not my strong suit.

Okay, you guys get more of the back story...

If you notice to the right of the shelves there is an old cabinet with a blue tile top.
Someone gave that to me about a year ago.
The Mrs said she wanted more shelves in the pantry as it was getting quite unorganized so I was gonna build some of 2x lumber and I remembered the cabinet out in the barn.

I measured it and it would fit length and height wise but it was so deep that the original can shelves hindered it going into its spot. So I had to cut off a couple inches from each can shelf. Since I'm removng all the cans and cutting off the ends I might as well fix the angle.

As I was removing the shelves I bumped the battery holder. All the batteries spilled out all over the place. I tossed them all in a bin and in the photos you see on the blog, I have not yet put them back.

Same with some of the can shelves - they are not stocked because the cans were still sitting on my dining room table when I took the photos. I just was tired of dealing with construction and wanted to get the blog up.

And now you know... the REST of the story.

They used to hang them in spring houses - from nails
The deepest north corner of the basement should work in a pinch - or maybe a screened north porch?

I have plans for a root cellar.

Great idea for storage, Joe. I am waiting for Home Depot/Lowes to cash-in on the design as the "Recesion Pantry Package", But with the bail-out and the new messiah getting elected people aren't worried anymore. So it wouldn't sell. I had/have older relatives that lived thru tough times during the Great Depression. One thing in common with all of them-a well stocked pantry. Two I remember used 1" x 3" pine boards as shelves. They put the new cans on one end and the older cans were on the other, so they never had to rotate them.Same idea, different approach.

so do you have two types of items on each shelf?
seems like you could add another one or two racks to the outside .
i like the design . my pantry is starting to become a catch all .
the next time i get mine straighten up i will post some pictures.

Yes, now I have two different items on each shelf.

I used to have 3 because I had tuna in the middle row of each shelf - now there is no middle row.

Yep, you could make it deeper - but this way it really doesn't take up a lot of floor space and it holds most of our cans.

Going with the golden rule of "stock what you eat and eat what you stock" this many cans is a lot for us because we mostly eat fresh veggies and stuff. We kinda have to force ourselves to eat canned food just to get through it.

My wallyworld cheap metal shelves fianlly decide dthey were oevrloaded with flour and sugar and decided to buckle....

Didn't quite topple but it was close. Now only light stuff is on that shelf but I guess I surpassed the capacity. Will need more space or upgraded shelves....

sounds like that is a good problem mike ,to much food for the shelf

DH has just decided I need some shelves like those. Plans have been downloaded, but I don't know where to put the finished product...
