Sigh, yes it's time

Despite all my disclaimers to the opposite, it became very clear the end of 2009, that I needed to up my fitness.

We had a garage fire at 1 am, in low temps, probably 15-20 degrees, and only a few old geezers, including me, showed up to the fire.

Of the ones who showed up, only 2 of us were cleared to put on air tanks and go inside the building. I was one of those two.

Fire gear weighs probably 10 to 20 lbs, helmet, coats, boots and all. I've heard the air tank and regulator belt is another 30. I don't know about that. Then, we were ordered to haul down the garage ceiling, so we were pushing a pike pole up through the drywall, and pulling it down. Aerobic workout. Needless to say, it was exhausting, and my partner ( a big former football guy 50 year old who has his own issues) and I couldn't work for long, about 5 minutes, before we needed a rest.

the whole incident lasted about 3 1/2 hours, with everyone involved worn out by night's end. I carried the air pack at least an hour.

The next day I had the pains-in feet and lower back. It became obvious to me I needed to get into some kind of shape if I am to continue on this department.

So, me and DH started crossfit at the local gym. I am hindered in that I pulled something in my shoulder when lifting 4 50 lb. bags of feed, one at a time, and dumping them in storage trash cans. Saw the chiropracter and MD for that, referred to orthopedics, will be seen soon. MD and chiro said bursitis, physical therapist said tendonitis or torn muscle.

Feet are acting up from crossfit too-I could only do 74 jump rope before I thought my heart would leap out of my chest, that was day one. I got up to 100 yesterday. For feet, I have mobic from MD, also for shoulder, and doing lots of stretching. Also, physical therapist gave me shoe inserts, they are wonderful, better than any I bought in the past.

Fitness at my age involves a village, lol, as you can see. But, about the finish first week, and not dead yet, so onward and upward.

Highly recommend getting on some sort of regular program/schedule, even if it's only walking for 30 minutes a day. It's worth the effort.

Kuzushi, how is your 60 day program, done?

Kuzushi,
It's called resignation. I am resigned that I have no other choice.

For you, I would think the fact that you are young and will respond quickly, and that you can work out without having all the aching, swelling, hurting issues that we older folks have, would be motivation. You can be a stud in 6 weeks.

Want more motivation? Put on your BOB and try walking 5 miles with it. That will open your eyes, for anyone.

And BTW, I am starting to feel like a "real Crossfitter" - I have scrapes and bruises on my shins from deadlifting today :D

It's past time for me too Morrigan. After spending all of last year knowing that I had to do something, but not doing it, (Joe's quote about a little sleep, a little slumber really comes to mind  ) I finally decided that this is the time to do something. I really don't enjoy working out at all, and I have trouble motivating myself to go and do it alone. I'd love to do crossfit, but the closest place to do it is an hour drive, one way. Same thing with arnis. That was part of what kept me from going last year. I have some friends who started taking a class called spinning. It's basically organized stationary bicycle riding with a leader. It seems a little silly, but to be honest, I leave class exhaughsted (which is wierd because I don't feel horribly sore all over the next day like I always do whenever I've worked out in the past.) Class is fun because there are people there I know. Once I get used to doing that, I'm going to start taking karate lessons one night a week. I would really rather take arnis, but I've never taken any formal martial arts training, so I guess this is a good enough way to start. It's only a 20 minute drive to get to where both of these classes are, so it works out a lot better for me than trying to decide to drive an hour and do what I really want to.

My co-workers are spending membership fees at gyms to work out. I figure cutting splitting and hauling firewood is my "gym time". Another snow storm is coming. I have more wood cut stacked and split than I did in October, but I still feel like I need to go get "just a little more" before the snow covers it - just in case.
