Solar trickle charger for BOV battery?

Postby Rich » 30 Jan 2014 02:06

My BOV is a diesel truck which sits unused for up to 3 weeks at a time. This means the batteries get low and since it is already hard to start a diesel in the winter I am unable to get it going without 3-4 hrs heads up (to hook up an AC cord to heat the engine block and sometimes to charge the batteries). Considering putting a solar trickle charger on the dash which should keep the batteries topped off.

Example:

Any thoughts/experiences?

I bought it and it's plugged in. Will see if it makes a difference.

I let it sit for 3 weeks with really only morning sun on the solar charger but it cranked right up. Hard to give a really strong recommendation as the outside temp wasn't really cold, maybe around 50.

My truck has cranked everytime this winter, even though we've had some ridiculously cold mornings. I think it's because of this solar charger since I'm using the same batteries that gave me such a hard time the last few winters.

May have to now get one for the tractor for the same reason...
